The Family Place opened in 1978 as the very first shelter for battered women and children in the state of Texas. Nearly fifty years later, it has grown into one of the largest family violence service providers in the state. Ken’s has been proud to stand behind this work for decades, since the very beginning, and our connection to The Family Place runs deep. My own grandmother, Hermine Sallinger, was an original volunteer at that house in 1978 for many years. She used to bring me over to assist in licking stamps and envelopes to get the word out.
In a single year, The Family Place serves more than 40,000 people across Dallas. It helps women, men, and children who need a safe place to go.
The Family Place provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling, a 24-hour hotline, children’s programs, medical and dental care, and so much more, all of it aimed at making every home a safe one. When you shop with Partners Card, every purchase helps fund their mission.

COMMUNITY AT KEN’S
A Sunday Afternoon with the Young Men’s Service League
This weekend, I sat down again with a group from the Young Mens Service League. These sessions mean the world to me, and today, Kramer was able to join me for our session.
We taught these young men what a local small business actually does for Dallas — how a shop like ours contributes to the city’s economy, to the community, and to their own schools. Understanding that is a blessing in itself, and if each of them walks away with just a couple of nuggets from our conversation, then they’re already ahead of many of their peers.
A few of the things we covered:
- The three main ways to tie a tie, and the meaning of each.
- The appropriate dress for homecoming, versus prom, versus a wedding.
- How to dress for an interview in highschool, for college, and beyond.
- What to expect to wear once they’re in college.
- Always presenting yourself as a gentleman, and why it matters.
Here’s the main lesson I want them to carry with them: Those who are well dressed usually find themselves with a few more opportunities to get ahead. It isn’t about vanity. It’s about having respect for yourself and for the people you meet. Presenting yourself as a gentleman opens doors, and that habit will serve them well throughout their lives and careers.
These events are one of my favorite ways of engaging with the community. I’m grateful to the YMSL for the chance to be part of these young men’s lives, and I can’t wait to see where they go.
